There is, of course, a whole lot more the UK and Scottish history than outlined in this post, but next time someone waxes lyrical about the great history of Great Britain (especially if they invoke the glory days of Empire) remind them that Scotland’s ‘glory’ within the Union came at a huge cost to so many ordinary Scots. Why do you think there are so many Scots-descendents living all over the world? If life at home in Scotland was so great for their ancestors, why did they choose to leave Scotland and risk the uncertainty of the New World? If Scotland – or the UK for that matter – is so great just now, why do people emigrate to Australia or New Zealand today? How many of you know someone who has left the UK to live abroad for a better life? How many of you have considered doing so yourself?
The take home message from this article is that Westminster has lied to Scotland from before the Union and continues to do so to this day. Bear that in mind when the politicians ‘promise’ more devolution, more money or more benefits for remaining in the UK. What makes you think they are not lying to us now?
